SHORT TERM MISSIONS (STM) Our goal as a congregation is to send everyone who attends Windhaven Church on mission project. Usually the assignments are from one to four weeks. Our Short-Term Mission Team works at organizing mission opportunities and raising funds to assist individuals who want to serve. We also support long term missionaries associated with the Brethren Church.
Below is a list of those who have gone on short term projects:
In the summer of 1992 we sent Becky Miller Lyda to Jamaica to teach Vacation Bible School and John and Mary Makely later in 1994.
In July 1996, our High School Youth Group went on a week long service project at the Riverside Christian School in Hazard, Kentucky.
Mike Miller served three weeks in Albania in October 1996 through the Virginia Mennonite Board of Missions.
Debbie Lockridge in 1997 as a teaching missionary to Columbia.
Teresa Hoover Shifflett served for a month in Jamaica teaching Vacation Bible School in 1999, where she taught at several churches
In 1998, we supported Joshua Earman when he joined a J.M.U. campus ministry team that shared their faith on the streets of New York City and later when he went on a six week mission trip to Asia in the summer of 2000.
Tongia Earman Good, a nurse, joined a medical team that went to Armenia in October 2000 for 2 weeks with Dr. Yoder of Harrisonburg.
In April 2000, we sent a team of 6 men to work at the Maranatha School for the Deaf in Jamaica to help build an apartment for missionaries. The work team included: John Morgan, Gene Good, Mitch Strickler, Randy Walters, Loren Lehman and former pastor, Jeff Earman
In April 2001, we sent another team of 5 men to Jamaica: Randy Walters (team leader), John Morgan, Mike Ryman, Tony Neri, and Anthony Torriente. They helped build a new sanctuary for the Retrieve Mennonite Church.
Sarah Lehman and Teresa Hoover taught Vacation Bible School during the summer of 2001 for 34 Days in Alaska to a tribe of Indians located near the Bearing Strait.
Joshua Earman became a full time staff member with a campus ministry at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA in 2001. Windhaven continues to support him financially as he shares his faith with the students at J.M.U.
Sarah Lehman spent a month in Alaska in 2003, where she led a Vacation Bible School team who taught children about Christ throughout the remote islands. She went back in the summer of 2004.
In November 2003, former Pastor Jeff Earman traveled to Argentina to investigate short term mission possibilities. While there he attended worship services at three congregations and met with the leaders at the Brethren Seminary. He also assisted at children's "Milk Stations" in Colon.
Dr. Scott Cole, M.D., went to Argentina in October 2004, where he examined children at various Milk Stations and at the Colon Church medical clinic. He also was a guest on a local radio station and gave a talk to large group of mothers about child raising practices. Scott spent a day working at a construction site at the seminary.
Aaron Good spent his summer in 2005 in San Diego, CA with Campus Crusade for Christ. He worked a part-time job and received training in evangelism and discipleship in the evening. Aaron applied what he learned in the classroom at the beach, parks, and on the streets, as he shared his faith in Christ with others. The Windhaven Church youth group had a yard sale to assist Aaron with his expenses.
David Miller led a team in April 2007 to Louisiana to help clean-up homes that were devastated from Hurricane Katrina. Stacy Wood, Nancy McNeely, Kemi Emmert, John Edelman, Raymond Jett, and Chuck Lloyd worked with the Samaritan's Purse Ministry.
Windhaven Church financially supports the ministries of the Shenandoah County Young Life chapter, the Shenandoah County Pregnancy Center, and Campus Crusade for Christ.
We are involved in these organizations through fundraising banquets, golf tournaments, walk-a-thons, and through our annual church budget. A number of people from Windhaven serve as paid staff or as volunteers in these important efforts.
